A quick update having changed plans due to illness late last month.
On the back of successful races at Speedway in January (we’ll be back on June 13th with Jo racing as well, & recommend the race to anybody looking to run a fast 10K!) & Alsager in February the plan was to build on that & head to Reading Half last Sunday with the target a significant PB going straight into the 64’s.
A great week based in Spain at the end of February was just what I needed to make the next step up in training. Some real quality starting with a 10K tempo on a hilly course near Alicante (31:11, advertised as flat & fast until their complete change of route the week before!) & good to see some friendly faces for a gentle run up the road in Murcia.
I ended up working most days during the trip & that, the hard training & a few bugs around the office the week before travelling eventually brought me to my knees on the last day of the trip! A solid progressive tempo along the river but off target pace & feeling groggy – as soon as I got back the the UK I was done for & took 10 days to feel normal again.
The following Friday we were back to Spain for our local club race with friends from C.A. Benijófar. Still feeling awful we agreed on the Saturday Reading was off, & until late that evening I wasn’t sure I’d manage to race the 7.6K even. Although still rough it was a successful morning for us with Jo also taking the win! I missed my own course record which had originally been my minimum target but running well inside 5mm pace on the tough course was a pleasant surprise feeling how I did. Great to see Jo back racing.
At last I’m back into proper training, clear of the nasty cold & quickly back to where I left off! Next up the 12 Stage & Brighton 10K will come round very quickly! Feeling confident that another few weeks will put me in a great place to race well there.
